Red sandstone cliffs formed by
wind and water, gleaming white lighthouses against brilliant sunsets, scenes of
Islanders busy plying their trades on the land and sea, these are images
familiar to travellers in the North Cape Coastal Drive region, the Island's most
westerly region.
Touring this region will yield unexpected encounter with
potatoes in museums, seaweed in pies and giant windmills turning gracefully at
the province's tip. The city of Summerside forms the urban anchor to this
region of the Island, an area rich with history and culture.
A tour through the
region provides encounters with the province's primary cultural groups -
beginning with the native Mi'kmaq at Lennox Island and continuing through the
centre of Acadian culture, La Region Evangeline, and of course including the
predominant Celtic heritage presented in a lively fashion at the Canadian
College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts in Summerside.
